If you yearn for some genuine Canadian wilderness, it doesn’t get any better than the Kodiak Brown Bear Center and Lodge. This wildlife refuge is an Alaska lodge on Kodiak Island in the midst of Karluk Lake. This is not a brown bear center. It’s their real home. The Kodiak Brown Bear Center has one of the largest concentrations of brown bears anywhere in the world. And they roam freely without any restrictions. The Center is a great place to watch them move through the wilderness. The cabins offer private patios and a luscious view of the lake and mountain. Sit back and enjoy a drink beneath the stars. Fresh seafood meals at the Lodge are included in your stay. Here, both humans and bears compete for the best salmon.

About Alaska
Alaska has two primary travel seasons. The summer months of May through September has optimal daylight and fantastic hiking opportunities as well as lots of romantic cruising among the glaciers. The winter months of November through April have short days. This is when to see the Northern Lights do their dance. It’s a breathtaking sight.
Alaska is situated on the northwestern end of the North American continent. It is surrounded by the Arctic Ocean, the Yukon Territories, the Bering Strait, and the Bering Sea. It’s a wave and a smile away from Russia to the west.
Alaska has 34,000 miles of incredible coastline. You will find Alaska’s highest peak near Anchorage – Mt. McKinley at 20,310 feet. Much of Alaska is a permanently frozen Tundra. The rest is magical wilderness.
In addition to Anchorage, Juneau, Alaska’s capital, is one of its major cities. It is surrounded by tall mountains and glaciers. Due to its rugged location, the city of Juneau has no roads that connect it to the rest of the state. You cannot approach it by car. Travel happens by boat or plane.
Thanks to the surrounding mountains, Juneau offers more than 250 miles of hiking. You will undoubtedly spot plenty of bald eagles. There are more than 30,000 of them that call Juneau home. It’s also where approximately 600 humpback whales come between April and November to feed off the plentiful krill (tiny shrimp) that fill the waters. Take advantage of one of the many available whale-watching tours.
As anywhere else in Alaska, the seafood is abundant and fresh here. Whatever you are eating for dinner was likely swimming in the sea that morning. One of Juneau’s favorite restaurants is Tracy’s King Crab Shack located downtown, where you can feast on crab legs, crab bisque, and crab cakes. Markets such as Jerry’s Meat and Seafood will ship crab legs to your home, if you ask them to. The Salmon Spot is famous for its just-caught salmon. One menu item you may not be expecting but should really try is the reindeer sausage, a standard in restaurants and food trucks alike.
While in Juneau, a can’t miss experience is the three-hour float plane to Taku Lodge tour. Soar over the glaciers and snow-covered mountains, and incredible waterfalls. You will enjoy a meal of – surprise – fresh salmon. You can wander the trails on your own or with a guided group. Keep an eye out for wandering bears. They know you’ve been poaching their salmon.
Alaska is all about glaciers. There are more than 100,000 of them. Take a glacier cruise to revel in one of the world’s most magnificent and unforgettable sights.
Best Time to Visit Alaska
The Northern Lights, or the aurora borealis, is one of nature’s most surreal and colorful light shows. They happen all year round but can best be seen from September through April, when the nights stretch into 18 hours. This is when people from everywhere flock to Alaska for this ethereal phenomenon.
The aurora doesn’t go by a timeclock. It just wants enough darkness. The city of Fairbanks is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. Not only is this the sweet spot for catching the perfect aurora, but it is also easy to find accommodations here. There are plenty of tours in town that will gather up the waiting crowds at the first sign of a light. You will need to be ready, and the wait can take up to five days. It is possible to catch the Northern Lights in Anchorage, but it probably won’t be as spectacular.
Since viewing the Lights will only happen at night, you need other activities during the day while in Fairbanks. This can include taking a tour of the Gold Rush culture and trying your hand at digging up some of your own. Or you can spend a few hours on a riverboat discovering the Chena River.
In August, the city of Palmer celebrates the Alaska State Fair. There are carnivals, lots of food, rides, and concerts. It is one of Alaska’s most beloved festivals.
The famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is always a source of tremendous excitement. It takes place for a week and a half in early March from Anchorage to Nome. This is a major event. The race’s headquarters and the best place for watching is the town of Wasilla. Here, you can take your own sled ride and feel the sheer force of these magnificent mushers.
Top Things to do in Alaska
Denali National Park
Here is Alaska’s beauty at its finest. Situated between Anchorage and Fairbanks, the park is home to reindeers, bears, and wolves. It’s a great place for hiking and biking and bonding in your new marriage. The scenery is out-of-this-world. If camping isn’t to your liking, there are several lodges within the park.
Mendenhall Glacier And Ice Caves
There is no place like these glaciers that are literally caves inside of ice. They are located just outside of Juneau. The glaciers have been there for 3,000 years and are melting a bit every day. The melting ice has turned into flowing water that streams through the glaciers. Once enough of the ice melts, the caves will collapse. That is why it is important to see them while they are still in existence.
You can traverse the caves on your own. However, visitors usually have a greater experience while on a guided tour.
Helicopter Tour
The splendor of Alaska can leave you speechless as your soar through the air for an aerial view in a helicopter. It will be an Alaska honeymoon experience you will never forget. Nor will you ever stop talking about it.
Chena Hot Springs
The Chena Hot Springs Resort near Fairbanks is a definite Alaska honeymoon change of pace. Here, you can forget about glaciers for a time and focus on the blissful hot springs. There are cabins, and you can enjoy some hiking, horseback riding, and canoeing, but you’ll return for the mineral spa treatments. Indulge in some relaxing Swedish massage, tension-releasing deep tissue massage, and some soothing hot stone massage.
The geothermal activity here produces a constant supply of hot mineral water. The resort has both indoor and outdoor Jacuzzis and an artificial lake that is the perfect place to catch the Northern Lights at the right time.
The Resort also sponsors a six-hour floats trip up the Chena River. You’ll be encountering eagles, salmon, moose, beavers, and other Alaskan wildlife, such as a grizzly bear. It’s the photo opportunity of a lifetime.
King Street Brewing Company
This microbrewery has regularly tasting sessions of its many beers, which are prepared with sparkling glacier waters. There are always food trucks outside to find some food to go with these special beers.
Alaskan Log Cabins
There is something to be said for a luxury hotel. But no Alaskan honeymoon is complete without a stay at a secluded, romantic cabin. Most of these cabins can only be rented during the summer months. Each one will provide you with its own unique, charming, and romantic experience.
Alyeska Resort
If you are ready to leave your romantic cabin for a luxury resort, the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood offers large rooms, seven restaurants, a pool, a sauna, and a full-service spa. There is skiing and sledding nearby.
Weather in Alaska
The summer months of May through September, with an average of 20 hours of daylight, usually have a very comfortable light-jacket temperature in the 70s or 80s. It’s a great time to visit, with the flowers blooming and the wildlife at its best. It’s also the top cruising season. These long days allow you to enjoy lots of different activities. Sadly, the Northern Lights are not at their best.
Winter is for sledding and skiing. The days are short, with darkness encroaching around 3:00 p.m. During October through April, the best place to be is in Fairbank, which is the prime Northern Lights viewing site. During those months, the temperature can drop to 30 degrees below freezing.
