About Barbados

Barbados, a splendid paradise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, didn’t start out as one of the world’s premier honeymoon destinations. In the 18th century, it was a British penal colony, a place to dump “undesirables.” It’s difficult to imagine this island of palm trees, perfect beaches, and tropical climate being used as punishment

Now, Barbados is all about its people. They are mostly Africans with a strong British influence in their lifestyle. These residents are as sunny as their weather and as inviting as their waters. The island has an incredible 100 percent literacy rate. They exhibit a warm combination of casual and worldly sophistication. Stop by one of the vendors and debate the meaning of life. Barbadians, called Bajans, have an inspired opinion on just about any subject.

Bajans differ from their surrounding islanders. They are naturally friendly and generous – just the type of people you want to meet on your Barbados honeymoon. They enjoy people and will make you feel at home. You couldn’t ask for better hospitality on your honeymoon. While the soft sands and clear waters are a dream, the people of Barbados might be the island’s greatest resource.

What Make Barbados a Great Destination for a Honeymoon?

Exotic and romantic, the island of Barbados has everything you want for your honeymoon. It is located in the Caribbean Sea in the Lesser Antilles. It is quite densely populated and covers approximately 166 square miles, a lovely size for an ideal Caribbean honeymoon.

The best part about a Barbados honeymoon is that you’re getting two experiences for the price of one. The west coast of the island is all about the stunning sandy beaches and pristine turquoise water lined with fabulous resorts. It’s the perfect place to luxuriate beneath palm trees or enjoy an assortment of water sports. Visit the east side of the island, and you will find a rugged coastline made for hiking and inviting waves for surfing. It all adds up to the perfect Barbados honeymoon.

Enjoy Barbados’ English roots. British English is spoken, cars drive on the left side of the road, and the day wouldn’t be perfect without a traditional English afternoon tea. If you don’t drive, there is ample and affordable public transportation, or you can take a taxi.

Barbados is a year-round paradise. There is plenty of sun even during the rainy season. So, regardless of what month you get married, Barbados is the ideal Caribbean getaway. Whether you want to escape the winter chills or enjoy the best that a summertime beach vacation has to offer, you’ll find it on your Barbados honeymoon. Bargain travel packages are always available, so give yourself time to find a good price before you book your trip.

Once you arrive, revel in the best food in the Caribbean, a great nightlife, and all the other delightful activities to enjoy. In Barbados, visitors are king and treated as royalty.

More Information About Barbados

You’ll have plenty of choices for your Barbados honeymoon. Pick a luxury hotel or a comfortable and affordable cottage by the beach. On the island’s western coast, you’ll be seduced by the posh hotels and some of the world’s most pristine beaches. Just allow the warm waters to embrace you (when you’re not embracing each other).

The eastern side of the island is more rugged. Not much has changed here since the British occupation. This split personality is the result of the two different bodies of water that surround Barbados.

On the east, you’ll find the Atlantic has a definite undertow, which is not the safest for swimming. There are a few hotels, but the area spreads out into a collection of rural villages that are fun to explore when you want a taste of real island life. You’ll encounter sugar plantations and luscious coconut trees. The scenery, much of it untouched by modern hands, is definitely magnificent.

As honeymooners, this is your opportunity to balance your indoor activities with some fabulous outdoor enjoyment. Whichever side of the island you spend most of your time, don’t miss a visit to St. Peter’s Bay on the east coast. Come for the diverse and extraordinary wildlife and stay for some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the Caribbean. Just stroll the beach as the sun disappears on the horizon, a drink in one hand and your arms around each other. It’s the very definition of romance.

Best Time to Visit Barbados

While most destinations are divided into the four standard seasons, Barbados has a dry season and a wet season.

The dry season lasts from January to the beginning of June. You can expect about an inch of rain per month. By August and throughout November, the wet – or hurricane – season is in full swing. These months offer the best travel deals, but September and October are the least popular months to visit this beautiful island. Incidentally, the term hurricane season is misleading when applied to Barbados, although it is usually used collectively in relation to all Caribbean islands. Barbados does get rain, but it saw its last big hurricane in 1955.

Barbados receives many visitors during the months of December and January from people who wish to escape the cold at home. If you are doing a holiday winter wedding, you can shift from cold into warm sunshine by booking a Barbados honeymoon. March is still a part of the island’s dry season, but this is spring break time, when many families bring their children for a short vacation. The families are gone by April, making April a very popular travel month, with the beaches being less crowded than usual. Humidity during the dry season is normally around 75 percent, but a refreshing breeze adds a nice level of comfort.

If you are looking for a combination of low rainfall and the best temperature, you should have a spring wedding and honeymoon in Barbados during the months of April and May.

For Barbados, the worst weather, or the most rain, occurs in October.

Top Things to do in Barbados

Few things are as romantic as a Barbados honeymoon, but you will want to leave the room at some point. Not only does Barbados have idyllic sceneries, beaches, and waters, there is an abundance of activities for you to enjoy to create a fabulous combination of fun and romance.

1. Atlantic Submarine Tour

Start your underwater adventure at Shallow Draught as you board a genuine submarine and take a 40-minute underwater excursion for sights that are usually only available to scuba divers. At a depth of 100 feet, you’ll move through colorful corals, exotic fish, and you’ll even pass a sunken ship. Revel in this exciting element and enjoy a complimentary beverage as you learn more about Barbados’ sea life from an experienced guide.

For some added romance, take the evening submarine tour.

2. Harrison’s Cave

Harrison’s Cave is considered a natural wonder and is visited by thousands of tourists each year. This marvel consists of an underground cave that was created by eroding water leaking through limestone. Tour the cave system by tram and marvel at the crystallized formations. They are extraordinarily spectacular. The tour itself is three hours, half of which is spent underground. After you’ve explored the cave, visit the wildlife reserve located here and enjoy the famed Barbados Green Monkeys and turtles. Here is your opportunity to see the wildlife in its natural habitat instead of a zoo. Harrison’s Cave is located five and a half miles from Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown, in the Parish of St. Thomas.

For some added romance, take the evening submarine tour.

3. Nicholas Abbey

The Abbey is located on Cherry Tree Hill in St. Peter’s Parish. Take a car or taxi to the location. If you have the time, prepare to spend an entire day here. St. Nicholas Abbey is a distinctive Jacobean building, only one of three remaining structures of this kind in the western hemisphere. This architectural style was favored during the reign of King James I of England. It used to be a sugarcane estate. Now, it is a rum distillery with a museum that recreates the plantation life during the 18th century. The tour will take you through the Abbey and its grounds. The building itself is well-preserved, with an incredible staircase and rare antique treasures. You will see the rum distillery and travel around on an old-fashioned tram. If you have the time, take a tour of Bridgetown while you are here.

4. Limegrove Cinemas

Remember when you were dating and went to the movies? Recreate those days with Barbados’ luxury theater, the Limegrove Cinemas in Holetown. They have new and popular releases. Watch your favorite movies while enjoying a delectable menu of great food and cocktails served to your comfortable, reclining seat.

Weather in Barbados

The weather in Barbados is warm and tropical throughout the year. Sunshine is the norm, with the island enjoying 3,000 hours or more of sunshine a year. The days are usually in the mid-80s. and the breezes make it comfortable. For the evenings, which can dip into the mid-70s, some people like to have a sweater, but it is still nice and comfortable.
