Colorado is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the country for a reason. It has incredible mountain vistas, national parks, clear lakes, and delightful small towns filled with our country’s history.
Colorado has an abundance of culture and history. And for love birds with a taste for delectable cuisine and grand accommodations, Colorado is the place to be. Nestled within the great Rockies, Vail and Aspen beckon. They both offer first-rate skiing, but each town has its uniqueness.
Aspen is the oldest of the two cities, from the 19th century Colorado silver rush. As such, it has four mountains, history, and culture in addition to shopping and great restaurants. Vail is younger, quieter, and has only one mountain. Both cities have thriving nightlife for après-ski that will enliven your Colorado honeymoon.
While in Colorado, the Seven Falls waterfalls in Colorado Springs shouldn’t be missed. Visitors worldwide come to marvel at the thundering waters crashing down. Two hiking trails are snaking around the Falls. Seven Falls can be reached by shuttle from the nearby Broadmoor Resort.
Across from the Falls, you will find Eagles Nest, the most spectacular mountain in Colorado. Hike its trails or enjoy excellent food at the Restaurant 1858, with waterfalls and mountains all around you. Photos of the view from Eagles Nest will make you Instagram-famous.
Also located in Colorado Springs, the state’s largest city by landmass, the Garden of the Gods is a park consisting of iconic sandstone formations millions of years old. Even the rival native tribes would not fight on these sacred grounds. Massive red and pink limestone grew vertically instead of horizontally into spectacular shapes and forms due to eroding rocks.

About Colorado
Colorado’s history is filled with unique firsts. It’s the home of America’s first rodeo. The first cheeseburger ever was served in Denver. “America the Beautiful” was written at Pikes Peak, the beauty of which certainly served as the inspiration for that illustrious tune.
Colorado burst to life during the silver and gold booms of the 1800 hundreds. Adventurers were rushing to the state in hopes of untold wealth. The booms were soon forgotten, leaving modern Colorado with dozens of deserted ghost towns. Some people returned east, others ventured further west and helped shape a different part of the country.
Following Colorado’s silver and gold rush, many towns were left deserted and have been a source of fascination for tourists (and ghost hunters) ever since. For a fascinating road trip through Colorado’s past, the following route is recommended.
Leave Colorado Springs via Route 24 West to Highway 67 to Cripple Creek. Here, take a nostalgic ride on the old Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. There used to be 500 gold mines here; now, you can visit the local casino. Just outside of Cripple Creek, you will find Victor, an old ghost town with buildings built in the 1800 hundreds. Stroll down Main Street, which has hardly changed. You can stay at or stop by the Victor Hotel, which is still in business.
Return to Highway 24 to head west to Florissant Fossil Beds, which houses the richest fossil deposits in the world. Continue west across the South Platte River to South Park City, a ghost town that has been restored, complete with a depot, drugstore, and schoolhouse. It’s like a movie set without Matt Dillon.
Further west, St. Elmo is one of the most famous Colorado ghost towns, with a saloon and a general store. There are also a few homes, so it hasn’t been entirely deserted.
Denver, Colorado’s capital and known as the Mile High City, is ultra-modern and hip, with an abundance of restaurants and pubs. Once a place where a cowboy sought out a good bowl of chili, Denver seems to revel in its own trendiness these days. She’s a grand dame with a brand-new facelift. Sushi bars, dim sum, and other Asian cuisine have taken over with a vengeance. The city is famous for its many breweries, as well as its favorite hangover cure: green chile.
An hour’s drive outside of Denver, you’ll find the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. This is where Stephen King became inspired to write the horror story, “The Shining.” The Stanley is known as the most haunted hotel in American. If you stay here and feel brave, book the Stephen King Suite 217 or the Ghost Hunter’s rooms numbered 401, 407, and 428. Even if you aren’t staying here, take either the day or night (scary!) tour of the hotel and its grand architecture. Your guide will be knowledgeable about its entire history. Call (970) 577-4111 for more information.
Best Time to Visit Colorado
The best time for visiting Colorado depends on what you would like to do. Skiing won’t be at its best in July, and you won’t enjoy much hiking in the freezing months of January and February. The mountains may be snowed in, while people are wandering Denver in short sleeves. So, you need to decide what your Colorado honeymoon plans are. Regardless of the time of your Colorado honeymoon, it is probably best to pack layering to be prepared for anything.
Obviously, the cold months of November through April are the most suitable for skiing. Heavy snowstorms can begin as early as October as resort owners scramble to open early. The month of December usually has the fewest visitors and provides some excellent accommodation bargains. That does not apply to ski and holiday towns such as Aspen and Vail when this is the time that the prices soar to their highest.
If your planned outdoor activities include hiking or rafting, you’ll want to visit Colorado from June through September. April and May are months that can be unpredictable weather-wise.
The highly popular Telluride Film Festival takes place every Labor Day weekend in Telluride. The fall also brings the annual Octoberfest celebrations to various cities, but the best-known one is in Vail. At the same time, Denver has the Great American Beer Festival.
Top Things to do in Colorado
Half urban chic and half Wild West, Colorado is an international destination, especially for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Make the most of your Colorado honeymoon by seeing its unique sights.
Located 15 miles from Denver, this Amphitheatre in Morrison consists of an incredible formation of – you guessed it – red rocks that provide perfect acoustics. Many live concerts, from rock to opera, are given here. Great music is being played while surrounded by one of the world’s most fabulous landscapes. You can’t miss it.
If you love history and nature, Mesa Verde National Park is your kind of place. The cliff dwellings along the canyon walls are close to a thousand years old. There are approximately 600 dwellings, some of them with rooms that are three stories high and large enough to be considered small villages. For some reason, the cliff dwellings were eventually deserted as the inhabitants moved to Arizona. What remains provides visitors with an excellent picture of how the ancient Puebloans lived their daily communal lives.
There are over 900 archaeological sites within two main areas, the Chapin Mesa and the Wetherill Mesa. Chapin Mesa has a six-mile drive that offers some great views, including the Cliff Palace, which is the most majestic of the dwellings. It was probably the residence of the local king or leader. The Palace has 150 rooms. Tours are available every half hour for a detailed history. Check out the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum for exhibits of old artifacts.
For more adventure in the Pueblo dwelling, take the Balcony House tour, which involves climbing up a tall ladder and crawling your way through a 12-foot tunnel.
The Mesa Verde National Park itself is 8,500 acres of wilderness where you can watch mule deer and wild turkeys in their habitat while driving around. You might also see the occasional bear, elk, or mountain lion.
This is the way to relax. The hot springs is one of nature’s own Jacuzzis. Soak in naturally hot mineral water that is 104 degrees. Enjoy a massage and other amenities inside the spa. The Hot Springs is on 44200 Co Rd 36, Steamboat Springs. There are picnic facilities, or you can stay overnight.
Great Sand Dunes National Park
If you thought only deserts have massive sand dunes, you haven’t been to Grant Sand Dunes National Park off State Highway 150. The dunes are the highest in the country. Some of them reach up to 750 feet.
The “High Dune,” as it is called, is the most challenging to climb. It can be a two-hour round trip. The tallest dune at 750 feet, called the Stair Dune, is a 5-hour round trip.
Sandboarding and sand sledding is a fun activity when you are on the dunes. The place to rent the equipment is Kristi Mountain Sports in Alamosa. If you are looking for a good workout during your Colorado honeymoon, this is it.
For something not so dry, go tubing down the Medano Creek, which you have to cross to get to the dunes. Or go fishing in Medano Lake.
It would be a shame to miss the famed Westerner’s resting place. He died and was buried at Lookout Mountain. There is a museum filled with information and memorabilia.
Weather in Colorado
Although Colorado is associated with skiing, the temperature is quite mild. It gets colder as you near the Rockies.
Denver gets hot during the summer months, and it only experiences a few rare snowfalls in the winter. Summer thunder and hailstorms are a greater weather hazard than winter snow because the hail turns into slippery ice.
Northern Colorado experiences cooler weather than most of the remaining state. As you near Wyoming, it gets windy and can hit below freezing during the winter months.
The southern part of Colorado, such as Colorado Springs, enjoys moderate weather for the entire year. It might get a bit of snow during the winter, but nothing that is overly cumbersome.
