About Costa Rica

“Costa Rica,” meaning “rich coast” in Spanish, is a lively, vibrant little country in Central America bordering Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.

Although it covers only about .03% of the earth’s surface, it is home to over 5% of the world’s species, making it the most biodiverse place on earth. Costa Rica is also one of the safest and happiest places on earth.

The small Central American country has a stable government, no military, and a low crime rate, making it an ideal spot for travelers. The Country’s motto is “Pura Vida,” meaning “pure life” in Spanish and is a phrase you will hear a lot when you visit. When a local says “Pura Vida” to you, they are altruistically wishing you happiness and prosperity in your life.

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica

One of the most favorable aspects of planning your honeymoon to Costa Rica is that there really is not a bad time to go. Because of its proximity to the equator, Costa Rica is lusciously tropical all year long. There are two seasons in Costa Rica: summer and winter. The summer season often referred to as “high season,” will be the dryer of the two and runs from December until April. The high season is the best time to be there for those who wish to spend most of their honeymoon relaxing on the sunny beaches or having cocktails by the pool.

The winter, which is often referred to as “green season,” will be the rainier season and runs from May until December. The green season is the more ideal season to be in Costa Rica for those wanting to spend more time exploring the lush rainforests. October is possibly the only adverse month to honeymoon in Costa Rica as it is the year’s rainiest month. However, you can still participate in most of the popular outdoor activities, even in a torrential downpour. Costa Rica’s busiest tourist season will be during their summer months, so if you want a more secluded and peaceful honeymoon, it is best to plan your trip during the rainier months to avoid the crowds.

Top Things to do in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a leader in ecotourism and outdoor adventures, so there is an enormous list of incredible sights and exhilarating activities to choose from on your Costa Rican honeymoon.

Among the most popular activities are horseback rides along the beach, ziplining through the luscious rainforest, surfing incredible waves, spotting rare wildlife on a hike, relaxing in a geothermal hot spring, rappelling down rushing waterfalls, and snorkeling in the warm turquoise waters. Rain or shine (and you’ll usually see a bit of both every day no matter the season), Costa Rica is sure to be both an action-packed and incredibly relaxing destination for couples to travel together.

One must-see destination during your honeymoon in Costa Rica is the Arenal Volcano National Park. This national park is covered in about 50% tropical rainforest, and the view of the surreal Arenal Volcano makes it one of the most mystical sights in all of Costa Rica. Arenal Volcano is also the most active volcano in Costa Rica. Its peak is usually covered by clouds but can be fully seen most often in February, March, and April. There are many exciting activities to choose from in this national park, including a hanging bridges tour through the rainforest, ziplining, cliff jumping, and horseback riding. You could spend days here exploring this spectacular national park and spotting all of the incredible and rare wildlife such as hundreds of species of birds, white-faced capuchin, jaguars, sloths, howler monkeys, snakes, and coatis. There are also many beautiful waterfalls and hot springs to check out while in the park. Arenal Volcano National Park is truly a wildlife lover’s paradise and will undoubtedly be a very memorable part of your honeymoon.

La Fortuna, meaning “the fortune” in Spanish, is the gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park. This small village is most well known for the magnificent La Fortuna Waterfall. Deservedly, this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, so if you are planning your honeymoon during the busy season, it is best to go as early in the day as possible to beat the crowds. While in La Fortuna, you can also hire a guide and rent equipment to go waterfall rappelling for those seeking a rush of adrenaline. Honeymooners will especially love the beautiful, relaxing geothermal hot springs around the volcano’s base on the Tabacón river. Tabacón Thermal Resort and Spa is renowned for being the most magnificent place to experience the hot springs of Costa Rica and is an absolute must-do while in the country.

Another place to add your Costa Rican honeymoon itinerary is Monteverde, the cool, humid, luscious, mountainous area of the country. Located in the central point of Costa Rica’s continental divide, Monteverde is most well-known for the mystically dense, low hanging clouds that hover around the jungle. There are many unique ways to experience Monteverde. You can book a canopy tour on a suspension bridge, walk through the many well-maintained hiking trails, or float through the clouds on a sky tram. For those seeking a thrill, perhaps the most exciting way to see some of this beautiful forest is through an exhilarating 770-meter long ziplining tour. Other activities to enjoy in Monteverde include an orchid garden tour, canyoning, a tree-climbing tour, a horseback riding tour, a coffee and chocolate tour, a bird watching tour, and even Spanish language lessons. There is something fun for every type of honeymooning couple to enjoy in Monteverde.

Another beautiful Costa Rican destination to visit on your honeymoon is Manuel Antonio Beach and National Park. Over on the Pacific Coast, the Manuel Antonio area is famous for its secluded beaches, exotic wildlife, and prime surfing. The most popular trail in this park is the Perezoso trail, on which you will have spectacular views of the offshore islands and Pacific Coast. While hiking through the park, you are likely to see toucans, parakeets, monkeys, sloths, iguanas, and many more fantastic wildlife creatures. There are also four beaches within this national park, so there is plenty of room for everyone to feel like they have a little bit of private beach to themselves, making it a very romantic spot for honeymooners. The list of adventures to choose from in Manuel Antonio National Park includes catamaran tours, jet skiing, ATV tours, mangrove boat tours, and scuba diving. Whether you and your partner want a full day of adventuring or just want some alone time on the beach, Manuel Antonio National Park will be an enthralling stop on your Costa Rican honeymoon.

Over on the Caribbean Coast, Tortuguero National Park often referred to as the “mini-Amazon,” is another must-see on your Costa Rican honeymoon adventure list. This isolated park is only accessible by small plane or boat. It is most well known for its impressive variety of wildlife that can be seen from the river tours, including frogs, birds, freshwater fish, crocodiles, manatees, monkeys, and most famously, sea turtles. The most popular time for tourists to visit Tortuguero is from July through October because this is the sea turtle’s nesting season. Four out of the seven of the earth’s known turtle species choose to nest their eggs on Tortuguero Beach, making it an incredibly important beach for the conservation of the sea turtle. Because the sea turtles nest their eggs at night, visitors are required to hire a guide after 6pm to see these turtles up close and personal. The experience is promised to be nothing short of magical.

For couples looking for a fun night out on their honeymoon in Costa Rica, Playa Jaco is the place to be. Located just a couple of hours from Costa Rica’s capital city of San José, this vibrant and energetic little beachside village is brimming with fun activities during the day and a lively party scene at night. Jaco Blu is the most famous Jaco nightclub; it sits right on the beach and is often described as having the vibe of a glamorous pool party in a fancy Las Vegas hotel. A few other notable clubs include ManCave, XTC, and Le Loft. There are so many fun bars and nightclubs to experience that you and your partner will probably end up bouncing around from place to place all night and having a tough time stopping the party and turning in.

Weather in Costa Rica

While the weather is generally pleasantly hot, humid, and rainy in Costa Rica, there are many different climates coexisting within the country. You will experience bright sunny beaches, cloudy mystical highlands, and thick wet rainforests throughout the country’s various regions, all in one trip. You can expect to need a rain jacket, sunscreen, quick-drying and breathable clothes, a bathing suit, and bug spray no matter what time of year you decide to plan your honeymoon there.

Getting to Costa Rica

Getting to Costa Rica can be quite time consuming as, unless you live in Central or South America, you will likely have to catch more than one flight to get to the country’s airport in the capital city of San José. Once you have arrived in San José, renting a car is the best mode of transportation. There will be Uber services available in the capital city, but access to Uber drivers will be scarce once outside of the main areas. Public transportation is available, but the bus system can be confusing, sporadic, and uncomfortable. When renting a car, make sure to use a credit card that offers insurance for the rental car, as car rental services in Costa Rica are known to charge hefty hidden fees for insurance.
