The state of Delaware is conveniently located in the northeastern portion of the US by the Atlantic Ocean. It borders New Jersey to the east and Pennsylvania to the north. It also shares a border with Maryland.

Delaware’s stunning coastline provides plenty of opportunity for romance. However, its pride and joy might be the Nemours Mansion and Gardens in Wilmington, which was built by Alfred de Pont and is rumored to be America’s version of Versailles. The formal gardens are the largest in America. Like Versailles, the mansion is open to visitors. The Nemours Mansion is a rare sight anywhere, let alone in the U.S. Where better to begin your Delaware honeymoon?

Explore our guide to the best honeymoon destinations in the USA.

The mansion was built at the turn of the 20th century. There are five floors, 70 rooms, and visitors can roam through three of them. The artwork is impressive, and the furniture is lavish but comfortable.

du Pont turned the basement into a play area, complete with a pool table, bowling alley, and gym. There is also a cigar room.

The first floor comprises the entertainment area, with fine art and priceless antiques. du Pont’s brilliance can be deduced by the cork flooring installed in all places where there would be much standing, such as the kitchen. The mansion has some genius details.

The second floor has too many bedrooms to count. Each one overlooks the stunning Versailles-like garden with its fountains, sculptures, and lake.

Wander through the gardens to the garage, which is filled with vintage automobiles.

If the above gives you a taste for luxuries, visit the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover and try your luck with over 2,000 slot machines and 36 tables. The casino hosts live harness races during the winter through spring, and there is thoroughbred racing throughout the year. Someone has to win big, right?

About Delaware

Delaware is one of the original 13 states. The only state smaller than Delaware is Rhode Island. Dover is the capital of Delaware, and it is definitely worth a visit. While the state has some forests and wetlands, it offers romantic getaways and plenty of historical culture. America’s first beauty pageant, the “Miss United States,” was staged in 1880 in Rehoboth Beach. Thomas Edison, who apparently did more than invent light bulbs, was one of the judges.

The coastal towns along the Atlantic exude a charm without being touristy. There is an abundance of hideaways that add up to a stunning Delaware honeymoon.

Rehoboth Beach isn’t exactly a hideaway. It’s one of Delaware’s sparkling gems by the water with everything to offer. There are several top hotels along the beach, such as The Avenue Inn, with its complimentary breakfast and luxury spa, perfect for a couple’s massage. The Hotel Rehoboth has an ideal location both by the beach and downtown, putting it at the center of activities.

The vast area around Rehoboth Beach has plenty of hiking, surfing, and bike riding. Watersports rule here. The mile-long boardwalk is a favorite of all, embraced for its restaurants and tax-free shopping at Rehoboth Mews. The boardwalk also has art galleries and hosts frequent concerts.

Dewey Beach is a coastal town of just over 300 residents and a throbbing nightlight. Loud music and fantastic food are a given here. For live music and dancing (on the floor or on the tabletops), try the Bottle & Cork. A band entertains most nights of the week. This bar was voted the “Best Night Spot for Young Vacationers.”

Another award winner in Dewey Beach is the Starboard, voted the “Best Nightspot in the State of Delaware.” It is also one of the 45 top beach lounges in the world. There are two dance floors and lots of lively entertainment. The Starboard just won’t stop standing tall since it also won the Best Sunday Brunch and the Best Downstate Breakfast awards.

By contrast, McShea’s Beach Pub is a laid-back pub with some terrific crab cake soup.

Delaware isn’t usually associated with wineries. However, there are several excellent vineyards to visit.

The Nassau Valley Vineyards offers taste testing of their chardonnay, merlot, and other varietals.

The Costa Ventosa Winery and Brewery is a half-hour drive from Dover. They have both wine and beer with unusual names. Indulge in some Puckum Pinot Grigio or some Porcupine beer.

The Harvest Ridge Winery is up the Coastal Highway. You’ll find ciders, chardonnays, and merlots. Visit the tasting room Sundays through Thursdays in the afternoon. Enjoy the wine and visit the food truck for some food pairing.

Winterthur Estate

We have already discussed the stunning Versailles-like Nemours mansion built by Alfred du Pond. However, for his relative, Henry du Pond, that would have been mere slumming. Henry built Winterthur in Wilmington, with its 170 rooms spread out over 96,000 square feet.

It is now a museum (Like the Nemours mansion) with the largest collection of Americana anywhere, 85,000 objects in all, each a rare gem. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended to prevent getting lost.

The emphasis at Winterthur is on the splendid 60 acres of garden. Each Christmas, The Winterthur Mansion is transformed into a fairytale Yuletide fantasy lasting until January 9th.

Battery Park

Scenic Battery Park is in New Castle, one of the Northeast’s loveliest parks. Just breathing in the healing air is relaxing. Strolling through New Castle is taking a walk through colonial times, with its old and beautiful houses. The waterfront Battery Park has a trail along the Delaware River that is the epitome of natural beauty. And the sunsets are breathtaking.

Weather in Delaware

The winters can get cold, with temperatures falling below freezing, but Delaware is still one of the least snowy states. The best months in Delaware are the fall month of September and the spring months of May and June. Summer hits the 90s and beyond. There is enough of an ocean breeze to keep the temperature within a comfortable range.
