Your dream honeymoon is all about amore, and Italy is where you will find it in abundance. Nestled within the Mediterranean Sea, Italy offers breathtaking beaches, mountains, art, and thousands of years of magnificent history. We haven’t even mentioned the food and wine. The country is nothing less than a gastronomical delight. Mona Lisa was smiling for a reason! Italy is number two in its choice of Michelin-approved restaurants. You and your new spouse deserve a genuine romantic Italian meal to celebrate your wedding. Don’t forget to include some fabulous Italian wine.

No matter where you are in Italy, you are surrounded by beauty. Italy has everything from the Alps to the beaches to some of the finest art and architecture in existence. Your honeymoon will be filled with a wide range of different types of experiences. Take a drive through the lovely countryside and enjoy the rolling fields of grapes and olive groves. These, like anything you’ll find in a museum, are gorgeous works of art.

Few honeymoon destinations offer the variety of romantic possibilities as does Italy. Strolling by the Amalfi Coast. Visiting a vineyard in Tuscany and sharing a bottle of wine – or two. Being serenaded while riding a gondola in Venice. Sipping wine while overlooking a vineyard in Tuscany. Cuddling close in a gondola in Venice. These are like scenes from a romantic movie, except that you will be experiencing the reality.

About Italy

Italy is the land of pizza and Michelangelo. It’s where delicious food and magnificent art are revered. The country is boot-shaped and shooting its heel into the Mediterranean Sea. While surrounded by water, Italy’s interior is crossed by mountains.

Art and architecture have always been at the center of Italian life. Few artists are as world-renowned as da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo. The Renaissance, or Rebirth, began in Florence, Italy, where art thrived, and new thoughts and ideas emerged that changed the world.

Italy has romance and more. Whether you are looking for luxury, adventure, or a taste of antiquity and the classics, you will find it on your Italian honeymoon. You can settle on one or two places or tour all the best sites while enjoying romance and eating your way through Italy:

  1. Florence, located in Tuscany, is well-known for its fabulous architecture. Here you will find bustling marketplaces, extraordinary galleries, and some of Italy’s most splendid scenery. Florence will provide you with the genuine feel of Italy. This is where the Renaissance was born. Even if you aren’t interested in history, Florence’s architecture, such as the most beautiful cathedral in the world, the Duomo, shouldn’t be missed. Neither should Michelangelo’s David.
  2. Venice should be a part of your Italian honeymoon. Share a kiss as you cross the Rialto Bridge, built in the 16th Explore the Grand Canal in a water taxi or a gondola. Displays of affection and kissing are perfectly acceptable inside a gondola. Don’t miss the San Marco Basilica, then visit St. Mark’s Square for a breathtaking sunset or sunrise.
  3. The Isle of Capri is considered by many as one of the most romantic and attractive places on earth. It has Italy’s outstanding architecture, its wonderful food, and some great sights. Instead of spending time on the beach (Capri really doesn’t have many sandy beaches), you will be exploring the marvelous sights while strolling hand in hand. It’s an island created for lovers.
  4. Portofino is a quaint village by the sea on the Italian Riviera. Beautiful houses, clear waters, and a 16th-century castle are a great draw for honeymooners, as is the panoramic view.
  5. Verona was made famous by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. How those young lovers suffered! The town is visited by romantics who come to Juliet’s statue and rub her breast for good luck – you don’t want to end up like her! While you are there, catch an opera in a 2,000-year-old arena, explore the city, and enjoy some refreshments at a local café.
  6. The Coast of Amalfi is rightly considered by some as heaven on earth. Drive along 35 miles of coastline via SS163, one of the most dramatic roads you’ll find anywhere. Thirteen quaint and colorful villages along the way attract many visitors. At the coastline, breathtaking mountains rise up dramatically from the sea. The best way to get to Amalfi is via Naples.

Best Time to Visit Italy

The best time for your Italian honeymoon can depend on what you want to do the most. If you intend to soak up hundreds of years of culture in cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence, and Milan, do your best to avoid the summer months. These cities are best explored in the fall and spring. The temperature will be mild, and you will likely get the best deals. The actual summer months can get hot, and many of the locals leave town to head for the cooler seaside.

If you are looking forward to touring Italy’s famed wineries, visit them in the fall. The grape harvest happens in September, but many vineyards may to too busy for visits. Be sure to call ahead.

To visit Italy’s unsurpassed beaches on the Amalfi Coast and near Sicily, the best months are April and May, before the summer tourists arrive. September and October, when those tourists leave, is also a good time. The Venice Film Festival takes place in September.

If you are honeymooning in February, the Venice Carnevale is not to be missed. The city is a burst of activity with masquerade balls, parades, fairs, and costume events. It Venice’s version of Mardi Gras.

If you are visiting Italy in the Summer, do visit the town of Siena. For several days, Siena shifts back to Medieval times, with medieval horse races ridden by medieval knights. The residents happily dress in their medieval outfit of choice. A good time for a knight to woo his fair maiden, even if they are already honeymooning.

Top Things to do in Italy

Your Italian honeymoon can include just about anything. There is much to do in Italy. Some of the country’s most amazing activities are:

  1. Cinque Terre consists of five connected picturesque towns located along a 12-kilometer path. It is easy to hike this path and delight in the entire vista. The cliffs you pass hover above the sea without the benefit of a railing. The panorama is unbelievable. Be sure to hold hands as you stroll along.
  2. When in Venice, ride a gondola. Gondolas are a symbol of Italy. The wealthy used them to traverse the city. Now, a romantic gondola ride through the Grand Canal is yours for the asking – and a goodly fare. The cost is €80 during the day and €100 for a moonlit evening ride. For your most romantic ride, find a gondolier who will serenade you (not all of them do). A good hint is to request your gondola ride to be in the outer, smaller canals. It is far less crowded and provides you with a different view of Venice than the Grand Canal.
  3. When visiting Florence, you will, of course, see all the great artwork. Florence has some of the greatest paintings and statues in the world. After that, take part in a different type of artistic endeavor – a genuine Italian cooking class. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn to make real pasta from scratch. These classes usually include a market tour where you learn the secret of choosing the right ingredients. Learn about the various types of cheeses and with what to serve them. You’ll be able to enjoy homemade pasta for the rest of your life, and your friends will be so impressed with your cooking skills. Turn up the heat in the kitchen with some real Italian cooking.
  4. See an opera at the Verona Roman Arena. You do not need to be an opera aficionado to enjoy this. The Arena is an amphitheater where you can partake in a concert or classical opera. The Arena is more than 2000 years old. At one time, it was able to seat 30,000 people. These days, around 20,000 people can watch an opera under the stars during a balmy Italian night. Italy’s other famous opera houses, in Vienna and Milan, require you to abide by a dress code. Not the Verona Roman Arena. Jeans and a T-shirt will get you a seat. The acoustics at the Arena are so incredible that the singers do not use microphones.
  5. One of Italy’s most recognizable symbol is the Roman Colosseum. While its history of gladiators and animals fighting to the death is bloody, it standing as a reminder of the power that was Rome. When visiting the Colosseum, check out the underground passages and doors used to stage these “entertainments.”
  6. After visiting picturesque Italian towns and some of the country’s best-known sights, it’s time to visit Austria. Not really, but that’s how it will feel when you travel to the Dolomites in northern Italy. These mountains are almost the anti-Italy, so you can enjoy two honeymoons for the price of one. The Dolomites are not about the pristine waters and mouthwatering dining that Italy brings to mind. It’s all about the fabulous mountain vista. You’ll swear you’re in Austria, down the grazing cows with bells around their neck. Julie Andrews is not included.

Weather in Italy

Italy has very hot summers and chilly, wet winters with only a bit of snow. In the normal tourist areas in Italy (Rome, Florence, and Tuscany), the temperatures can rise to 90 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and have been known to go above 100 degrees. The winter temperatures can reach 32 degrees, but it seldom gets any colder.

There is more of a chill when you get to northern Italy or the aforementioned Dolomites. The summers are usually a comfortable 80 degrees Fahrenheit, great weather for biking, and exploring the alpine mountains. During the winter months, there will be snow, and the temperature will drop to below freezing. It’s a great time for skiing.
