About Kentucky

Kentucky is bordered by Tennessee, Virginia, and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The state’s capital is not, as many may believe, Louisville, but Frankfort. Its fertile land made it a favorite place for settlers looking to go “west.” Daniel Boone was one of the earliest settlers of Kentucky.

Kentucky joined the south as a slave state. However, many immigrants were fervent abolitionists and formed strong anti-slavery groups. Kentucky found itself in the middle of the conflict and provided supplies to both the North and the Confederacy.

Besides its beautiful horses, Kentucky’s claim to fame includes its bourbon and moonshine whiskey. Incredibly, 95 percent of the world’s bourbon comes from Kentucky.

Unknown to great many, but held in awe by those that do, Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the U.S.’s most popular visitor’s destinations. Located by the green hills of the Appalachian Mountains is some of the most fertile land in the state. It is also a stunning underground world of sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers that make a dramatic contrast to the colorful landscape filled with wildflowers and lilies overground.

Mammoth Cave is one of the largest cave systems anywhere, stretching over 400 miles below ground. It is believed to have been inhabited as long ago as five thousand years. Much of the layering and carvings of the cave are the result of trickling water that created miniscule cracks  millions of years.

There are a number of tours deep into the  Mammoth Cave, including a boat tour like no other. Check with the rangers about the occasional stunning musical performances inside the cave.

It will likely take more than a day to explore the Cave and the National Park, with its hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. There is a lot to do and see here. Lodgings are available within the National Park at the Lodge, which is located by the visitor center. Here, you will find regular hotel rooms or romantic cabins in the woods. The Green River Grill and the Spelunkers Café & Ice Cream Parlor offer good food and take-aways.

If you prefer camping out, there are two campsites by the Cave, the Maple Springs Campground and the Houchin Ferry Campground, which is located more than 10 miles from the visitor’s center. The Camp Store can keep you in pizza and coffee.

In addition to its bourbon and fabulous caves, Kentucky is the home of bluegrass and newgrass music. People from around the world come to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro. At the nearby Rosine Barn Jamboree, dance to some live Bluegrass. The oldest bluegrass festival is the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Best Time to Visit Kentucky

Kentucky enjoys fun and will take any opportunity to celebrate. Depending on your interests, feel free to join during your Kentucky honeymoon.

World Chicken Festival in London

Everyone loves a delectable southern fried chicken. The World Chicken Festival just takes it much further. Watch a chicken cook-off contest and a mother/daughter beauty contest. For anyone athletic, there is a 5K rooster run. End the day with a Colonel Sanders look-alike contest (put on a white suit and goatee and join the fun). Follow this with a karaoke contest and a chicken wing eating contest. If you are into chicken, this is the place.

The Highland Renaissance Festival

Kentucky has a lot of unexpected pleasures. One of them is the annual Highland Renaissance Festival which lasts throughout the month of May in the town of Eminence. The medieval activities taking place on nine different stages here are endless. There will be live jousting, period dancing, sword swallowing, and acrobatics. There are plenty of wenches around. More than 75 merchants sell related merchandise such as soap, jewelry, herbs, and clothes.

Garvin Gate Blues Festival

This festival in Louisville is all about jazz. Be there during the second week of October.

Bourbon Festival

If you love good, rare bourbon, this is a can’t-miss bourbon festival in Bardstown. Four days of sampling hard-to-find rare bourbon accompanied with great meals. There is an auction for you to grab the bourbon of your choice.

Food trucks, catered buffets, barbecues simmered in bourbon are all a part of the festivities. Or enjoy a four-course dinner with proper whiskey pairing at the Rabbit Hole Distillery.

Barbeque By the River

Vendors throughout Paducah will be serving up some famed Kentucky barbeque during the last week of September. Get your chicken or pork, smoked or grilled to perfection. It’s a beautiful greeting to the fall season usually attended by 40,000 guests.

Crave Fest

Indulge your food cravings during the second week in September at Crave Fest in Lexington. This culinary extravaganza has 40 local restaurants serving food, wine, and cocktails with live music at the Masterson Station Park. This is an opportunity to sample a variety of restaurants without committing to the expense of an entire meal.

Top Things to do in Kentucky

Ashland Estate

Kentucky does not lack romantic estates. The Ashland Estate in Lexington will provide a tour and lecture about 19th-century living. The estate includes a lovely garden and path. Have some refreshments at the onsite patio Ginkgo Tree Café.

Kentucky Derby Private Horse Farm Tour

You can’t go to Kentucky and not attend the Kentucky Derby. However, its private behind-the-scenes tours are as exciting as winning the trifecta. See the private farms where these gorgeous winners are bred and raised. Tour a working horse farm and its well-known stallions. Watch their pre-race workout.

Your tour will also take you to a bourbon distillery for lunch and some bourbon. Later, you will end up on a 19th-century estate that serves as a stud farm. Enjoy a southern-style dinner with … no surprise … more bourbon.

Enough bourbon for the time being. Just south of Lexington, you will find the artisan community of Berea, known as the “Folk Arts & Crafts Capital of Kentucky.” Every type of craft can be found here, from glass studios, homemade jewelry, candles, and other pieces of art.

The Artisan Center has sales and demonstrations. Watch the artists while they create. It’s a fantastic place to load up on unique presents for family back home.

After you leave the Artisan Center, stroll hand in hand down Chestnut Street and visit the Something Old Antique Shop.

Berea offers more than art. Take the best hiking trail in Kentucky for a stunning view of the Boone National Forest while you enjoy a romantic picnic.

Red River Gorge

Nature was especially creative in Kentucky. First, the fabulous Mammoth Cave. Then the Red River Gorge in Stanton. This is one of the most magnificent rock formations, with arches that stretch to the sky and cliffs, that has thousands visiting annually. You can fish, hike, or just rent a boat and float down the Red River. There are great camping grounds with great opportunities for rock climbing. Red River Gorge is the perfect place for couples.

The capital of Kentucky, Frankfort, is uniquely surrounded by horses, vineyards, and bourbon country. This makes it a great starting point to wherever you want to go. You might not be surprised to learn that Frankfort has its own Bourbon tour. Downtown Frankfort also has great restaurants and shopping. After strolling through the city, have a picnic in Capital View Park. This is one of Kentucky’s best attractions.

Weather in Kentucky

The weather in Kentucky is fairly temperate. It gets less snow than the national average, and about 48 inches of rain per year, which is more rain than most states see. This could account for its lush greenness. It rains or snows approximately 120 days annually, with May being the wettest month.

July is the hottest month at 87 degrees. The fall month of September and the spring month of June are the most comfortable times. During the winter, the nighttime temperature can fall slightly below freezing.
