About Kentucky
Kentucky is bordered by Tennessee, Virginia, and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. The state’s capital is not, as many may believe, Louisville, but Frankfort. Its fertile land made it a favorite place for settlers looking to go “west.” Daniel Boone was one of the earliest settlers of Kentucky.
Kentucky joined the south as a slave state. However, many immigrants were fervent abolitionists and formed strong anti-slavery groups. Kentucky found itself in the middle of the conflict and provided supplies to both the North and the Confederacy.
Besides its beautiful horses, Kentucky’s claim to fame includes its bourbon and moonshine whiskey. Incredibly, 95 percent of the world’s bourbon comes from Kentucky.
Unknown to great many, but held in awe by those that do, Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the U.S.’s most popular visitor’s destinations. Located by the green hills of the Appalachian Mountains is some of the most fertile land in the state. It is also a stunning underground world of sinkholes, caves, and underground rivers that make a dramatic contrast to the colorful landscape filled with wildflowers and lilies overground.
Mammoth Cave is one of the largest cave systems anywhere, stretching over 400 miles below ground. It is believed to have been inhabited as long ago as five thousand years. Much of the layering and carvings of the cave are the result of trickling water that created miniscule cracks millions of years.
There are a number of tours deep into the Mammoth Cave, including a boat tour like no other. Check with the rangers about the occasional stunning musical performances inside the cave.
It will likely take more than a day to explore the Cave and the National Park, with its hiking, horseback riding, and kayaking. There is a lot to do and see here. Lodgings are available within the National Park at the Lodge, which is located by the visitor center. Here, you will find regular hotel rooms or romantic cabins in the woods. The Green River Grill and the Spelunkers Café & Ice Cream Parlor offer good food and take-aways.
If you prefer camping out, there are two campsites by the Cave, the Maple Springs Campground and the Houchin Ferry Campground, which is located more than 10 miles from the visitor’s center. The Camp Store can keep you in pizza and coffee.
In addition to its bourbon and fabulous caves, Kentucky is the home of bluegrass and newgrass music. People from around the world come to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Owensboro. At the nearby Rosine Barn Jamboree, dance to some live Bluegrass. The oldest bluegrass festival is the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
