About Minnesota

Minnesota is the most northerly of the 48 contiguous states. It is surrounded by Canada to the north and Lake Superior to the east, with thousands of enchanting lakes and rivers making up the landscape. There is a lake wherever you turn. The major city of Minneapolis alone has 15 lakes. Visitors can swim and bike during the summer and skate in the winter. The northern winters get quite icy, while the summers are comfortably warm.

Minnesota is all about the great outdoors, especially its national parks. Voyageurs National Park is meant for the adventurous. The park consists of more than one-third water. Mostly, the park can be accessed by boat or snowmobile. Many spend some quality time on a houseboat and simply soak up the clear air and sights. Twenty-seven scenic miles of trails will keep visitors spellbound.

Another large national park is the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, which spans 115 kilometers along the Mississippi River and flows through Minneapolis and St. Paul, making it a park with a considerable urban touch. Fifty-four thousand acres of the park is for fishing, ice fishing, boating, and skiing. Perhaps the best part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area is the Winchell Trail, five miles of trail on the Mississippi’s west bank in the midst of urban Minneapolis. This trail turns into one of nature’s wonders in the fall, when the colors morph into carpets of bright red and gold.

Minneapolis-St. Paul is a unique combination of sophisticated urban culture and nature in full bloom. Art looms strongly in the Twin Cities. The Walker Art Center is a top art institute that includes 11 galleries exhibiting modern art. There is also a cinema and theater. After enjoying a meal at the Gather Café, stroll the Sculpture Garden and look for the renowned “Spoonbridge and Cherry” sculpture.

The Weisman Art Museum is a teaching medium for the University of Minnesota. It exhibits 25,000 works of art from artists such as Georgia O’Keefe. It also specializes in traditional Korean furniture.

With the weather being a bit tricky in Minnesota, it helps to have great indoor entertainment. The Mall of America in Bloomington is the largest mall in the US, with 520 stores and eateries. This is a wonderful place to pick up some things for your new home.

Another exciting indoor adventure is the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium, located within the Mall of America. Visitors can really make a splash here. Prepare to spend an entire day. Walk through the 300 feet Ocean Tunnel with sharks, seahorses, stingrays, tropical fish, and jellyfish hovering overhead. Head through the rainforest with its crocodiles and tarantulas. Explore sea life as you’ve rarely seen it.

Best Time to Visit Minnesota

Minnesota enjoys excitement at any time, from the cold in February to the warmth of August. June, July, and August are the most popular months for visiting Minnesota. The weather is at its warmest, but the prices are at their peak. Visiting Minnesota during the winter months can result in great travel and accommodation savings.

Winter Carnival Craft

If you love beer, check out the Winter Carnival Craft Drink festival which runs from January through February in the heart of St. Paul. Get your crafted passport and sample special crafted beer in dozens of St. Paul’s breweries and other venues.

OTC on Ice

This is how Minnesotans celebrate the cold. The annual OTC on Ice on Otter Tail Lake happens for two days at the end of January. And it all happens on the ice of the frozen lake. Brave a Polar Plunge and enjoy the non-stop music – all while on ice. Six bands will be entertaining in a tent. It’s a good time to huddle close.

Minnesota State Fair

The St. Paul Fair takes place on Labor Day weekend, with thousands of visitors streaming in from all over Minnesota. There is food galore, including ravioli with bison meat. Fifty vendors sell everything from Christmas decorations to hand-made craft goods, jewelry, soaps and lotions, and a lot more. There are international booths with goods from other countries, such as France,
Ireland, Scandinavia, and others. This is a great place to stock up for the holidays.

Of course, there are the usual fair rides, fun houses, and extreme thrill rides, such as the Great Big Wheel, one of the highest Ferris wheels in the U.S. Ride it if you dare.

There is musical entertainment throughout the fair.

Downtown Minneapolis Street Art Festival

The Downtown Minneapolis Street Fair in mid-August turns downtown Minneapolis into an art delight. There are performances, artwork, and lots of food and fun.

Wine Knot St. Cloud

Anyone can do beer and brats in October. For something different, do the annual Wine Knot at the Regency during the first week of October. Sit back and enjoy fine wine and great hors d’oeuvres. While you indulge, watch the fashion show provided by E and Co. Clothing and shop to your heart’s content. Prizes include jewelry or a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. Wine, food, and a fashion show instead of the traditional Octoberfest could be the beginning of something new.

Top Things to do in Minnesota

St Paul Food Tour

The St. Paul Food Tour explores the best food in St. Paul while you learn more about the city’s history. The tour will take you from the Mississippi River across town to some of St. Paul’s favorite eateries, including a chocolatier with hand-crafted chocolates. The tour takes three hours, so you’ll have time to get to know the heart of the city.

Victorian Homes Tour

If you’re not picturing stately Victorian mansions in St. Paul, think again. The tour will guide you along Summit Avenue past manors dating back to the Victorian era. This is ideal for architecture connoisseurs, and you’ll learn about the people behind the grand walls.

Minnehaha Park

One of the outstanding things about Minneapolis is the many tranquil parks in the middle of the city. Minnehaha Park has bike paths, gardens, and a magnificent cascading waterfall.  Stroll the two miles from the Mississippi up to the park. The Sea Salt Eatery offers terrific seafood.

The Minnehaha Falls Pergola Garden is a beautifully designed garden, and the Longfellow Gardens has a replica of the house Henry Longfellow used to live in. It’s hard to beat culture and lovely blooms in one place.

St. Paul Gangster Tour

A lot of famed gangsters must have escaped the heat by escaping up north. Take the gangster tour and learn what brought John Dillinger, Ma Barker, Babyface Nelson and other miscreants up north. Quite a few of America’s Most Wanted ended their life here in St. Paul. Tour the courthouse where justice did its best to prevail.

Superior Hiking Trail (“SHT”)

The Superior Hiking Trail is Minnesota’s most admired hiking trail. It spans over 300 miles of nature’s remarkable beauty from Minnesota all the way to Canada. The trail is challenging and can be enjoyed for day hikes, a complete 300 hike, or for camping. There are 94 official campsites along the trail. The vista is filled with waterfalls, lush forests, and wildlife (you might meet a moose). This is the ultimate trail for any outdoor enthusiast.

Gensheen Mansion

This incredible mansion is one of the most visited houses in Duluth, and there are several available tours. It is beautiful, romantic, and absolutely fabulous. And it hides a dark secret.

The Gensheen Mansion consists of 39 fabulous rooms on the shore of Lake Superior. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the wealthiest man in Minnesota, Chester Congdon. Each of the tours moves beyond the mansion to the lovely gardens. With the house’s original furniture and decorations, as well as its formal gardens, Gensheen Mansion is Duluth’s very own Downton Abbey.

The tour does not go into detail about a horribly public murder in the house which occurred in the 70s. It is still one of Minnesota’s most infamous crimes.  However, the staff will answer any questions you may have.

Weather in Minnesota

The weather in Minnesota can vary a great deal. From humidity in the summer to heavy snow in the winter, Minnesota has it all. For skiers, the snow is usually freshest in February. The windiest winter month is November.

Spring in Minnesota can still feel cold, with the temperatures dipping below freezing. The chill wears off by June, and the summer is very comfortable for outdoor explorations.

September through November are preparations for a new winter. The temperatures during the day remain in the 70s and hit freezing in the evening. Minnesota winters bring genuine cold. Daytime high can be below freezing, and it gets even colder in the evening. For that reason, most visitors enjoy the Minneapolis Skyway System, a10-mile linked enclosed pedestrian walkway covering 80 city blocks.
