About Napa Valley

While Napa Valley is best known for its famous Cabernet Sauvignon, which comprises approximately 40 percent of the Valley’s harvest, it actually grows over thirty varieties of grape. The most popular are Cabernet, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Zinfandel. Regardless of the variety, you can count on it being special.

One of the most delightful things about Napa Valley is its comfortable, dry Mediterranean climate. This makes sightseeing an absolute pleasure. And you should take the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors while you are here. There is much more to see besides the beautiful vineyards.

Leave the wine behind and explore Bothe Napa Valley State Park, located at 3801 St. Helena Highway North in Calistoga. Go hiking, horseback riding, cycling, camping, or just enjoy a romantic picnic amidst some of the loveliest scenery imaginable. There are 10 miles of trails for you to explore. The cost to get into the park is $8.00 per car, which buys you parking and restrooms. On a hot summer day, jump into the swimming hole fed by spring water. The park is open between Memorial and Labor Days, and you need a $5.00 day pass to enjoy this refreshing swim.

Three and a half million people visit Napa Valley each year, and the valley is experienced in every type of hospitality – from Bed & Breakfast to luxury resorts. There is something for everyone. In addition, there is an assortment of fabulous Michelin restaurants from which to choose for an intimate dinner for two.

Perhaps it’s the wine, but the entire Napa Valley region flows with good spirits. Earthquakes and wildfires happen, but goodwill and camaraderie rules.

Wineries to Visit

The Valley is, of course, teeming with wineries. You won’t be able to visit them all, but there are a few outstanding vineyards that you really should not miss:

Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena

Call them at 707-257-5771 as they are open for wine tasting by appointment only. Beringer’s has been in existence for almost 142 years. The mansion itself is an exquisite piece of architectural history with gorgeous glass stained window.

Take a tour of the vineyard and learn about its history and the history of winemaking. Enjoy sampling three different wines as you wander through the tunnels of the wine cave.

Freemark Abbey

This remarkable stone building, which was built in 1886 by an enterprising woman named Josephine Marlin Tychson, is located just outside of St. Helena. Like many wineries in the area, they pride themselves on their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. There are several tasting rooms at the Abbey for the ultimate wine tasting experience.

You’ll experience a tasting of three different sparkling wine and learn about their history. The wine is paired with a specially prepared culinary delight. The winery’s mixologist will prepare cocktails using the sparkling wine. For a special romantic treat, surprise your new spouse with a twilight tasting set in the garden by candlelight. If you are honeymooning during the summer months, hire a private cabana located in the garden for a delightful lunch paired with an appropriate wine.

Best Time to Visit Napa Valley

Napa Valley is wonderful any time of year, but the best times for your Napa Valley honeymoon are August through October and the spring months of March through May. Most of the grapes are harvested between August and October, an event that draws many tourists. These months also have the highest cost for accommodations. But the breathtaking fall colors make it a desirable time to visit. Visit toward the end of the season, and you’ll enjoy both the beauty of fall and lower prices.

The actual harvest time around October is extremely busy. Schramsberg Vineyard has a harvesting camp. Guests are invited to enjoy every aspect of the wine making process by being hands on. Jordan Winery, located in Healdsburg, hosts several harvest luncheons creating meals from old family recipes to be enjoyed in the outdoors. These luncheons will, of course, be paired with the winery’s appropriate wines.

During the winter months of December through February, the weather gets a bit chilly, although not cold. Prices are at their lowest. There are a number of winter events that will add to your wine-tasting pleasure. In January, Downtown Napa is lit up with an array of artwork. There is also the Napa Truffle Festival. Besides caviar, few foods are as romantic as the fantastic truffle. Partake of truffle-infused meals and learn how to use truffles yourself. You also get to meet and pet the experienced truffle dogs who sniff out this culinary delight.

In February, Napa Valley has a Culinary Crawl, which allows you to experience the best foods in the entire Valley. It’s hard to beat a romantic Napa Valley honeymoon with some of the most fabulous wine and food in the region.

Top Things to do in Napa Valley

While most people visit Napa Valley for its outstanding wine, there are many other things to enjoy.

  1. Try your hand at bocce ball, which is big in Napa Valley. There are leagues in St. Helena and Yountville. You can watch the players or bring your own balls and play when the leagues are not.
  2. Enjoy a romantic hot balloon ride. Get the ultimate bird’s eye view of Napa Valley from above. All balloons ascend around dawn, and you get to soar as the sun comes up. It’s beyond magical. Balloon rides can last anywhere from one to three hours, depending on factors such as the wind. Check out the balloon companies that serve a delicious breakfast upon landing back onto terra firma. Many rides can accommodate as many as 20 passengers. However, why not go all-out for a romantic private flight for just you and your spouse.
  3. The Napa River flows through the scenic greenery of the vineyards for 55 miles. Paddle downriver and check out the diving ducks, ospreys, eagle, and Canadian Geese. The Napa River is home to a naughty sea lion who enjoys surprising the paddlers and kayakers as they move down “his” river. The best place to launch your river ride is at the Napa Valley Yacht Club on Riverside Drive.
  4. You’re on your Napa Valley honeymoon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring some culture you’re your life in-between wine tastings. Visit the Jessel Gallery (707-257-2350) located a mile from the Silverado Country Club. The gallery houses some of the best of California’s art. One room alone exhibits fine jewelry. The garden around the gallery is delightful and the ideal place for a picnic. If you visit the gallery on a Sunday morning, you can take one of her watercolor classes. It’s $50 per class.
  5. The Oxbow Public Market in Napa offers gourmet food (how does a duck, spinach, and goat cheese taco sound?). There are so many food vendors, you will want to wander through the Market before settling on any one. So many delicious choices … Enjoy a meal at the Market and buy some cheeses, meats, and desserts for a picnic. Needless to say, there is plenty of wine flowing through the Oxbow Public Market. Bottoms up.
  6. It’s a painful truth, but there may be such a thing as too much wine. When the thirst hits you and you’ve had your fill of wine, visit some of Napa Valley’s great breweries. Check out the Napa Smith Brewery, Downtown Joe’s Brewery, and Tannery Bend Beerworks in Napa. Downtown Joe offers some superb ales, porters, and stout.

Weather in Napa Valley

Napa Valley offers some of the best weather in the country. During the spring, the mornings and evenings are delightfully crisp. The days are warm and filled with sunshine, with temperatures reaching 72 degrees. Perfect for your Napa Valley honeymoon.

Temperatures during the summer months reach the 90’s.

During the autumn, the days remain warm while the evenings begin to cool down. This is harvest time and problem the best-loved time of the year.

Winters have a pleasant temperature between the 60s and 70s. A bit nippy for al fresco dining, but perfect for hiking and exploring the countryside.
