Oklahoma is a landlocked state with a greatly diversified terrain. It boasts gentle rolling hills, vast plains, as well as the Arkansas and Red Rivers. The state capital is Oklahoma City. The plains yield wheat, cotton, and peanuts, while the farms raise cattle and dairy products.

Oklahoma has always been Indian territory and became a part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase. Following the purchase, the U.S. spent a great deal of time and effort relocating the Indians to other territories. Thirty tribes were forcefully resettled to make room for ranchers and homesteaders. It is this sorry treatment of the state’s original inhabitants that is memorialized by the Cherokee Heritage Center and the Adams Corner Rural Village. 

Life in Oklahoma remained hard in the 1930s, when the great Dust Bowl destroyed many of the farms and ranches. But Oklahoma did not stay down. Its natural beauty endures and is rivaled only by the many man-made monuments erected for no reason other than to create breathtaking magnificence. Who would expect to find two huge architectural wonders amidst the prairie?

The E.W. Marland Mansion in Ponca City was built to display great art and turned into a magnificent work of art itself. It was erected during the hard Dust Bowl years, where it stood in jaw-dropping contrast to reality. The mansion is a 55-room Renaissance villa and is officially named as one of “America’s Castles.” The original furniture is still intact and can be admired during guided tours through the mansion. The first art collection remains, as do the dishwasher (circa 1930s), an elevator, and a dumbwaiter.

The second fantasy mansion in Oklahoma is the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, which includes both European and American art. It is the building itself that warrants attention. Like the E.W. Marland Mansion, it is a Renaissance villa built during the Dust Bowl era. Tours of the magnificent art collection are available. The garden has been named “the most beautiful place in Oklahoma” by House Beautiful Magazine. Strolling through the grounds of the Philbrook Museum is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Azalea Festival: Muskogee 

The  Annual Azalea Festival is how Muskogee welcomes spring in April every year. With 30,000 colorful blooms, this has been voted one of the U.S.’s “Top 100 events” by the National Bus. Association, 

Norman Music Festival: Norman

For two nights in April, Norman is filled with music. One Hundred bands playing all genres will entertain and delight. 

The McAlester Italian Festival 

Celebrate everything Italian for two days each May. Great food, unique crafts, and live entertainment for all. 

Red Earth Festival: Oklahoma City 

Oklahoma has always belonged to the Native Americans. The Red Earth Festival in June celebrates Indian heritage as 1,200 Native American artists and dancers from all over the country take part in the festivities and music while vendors exhibit genuine Indian art. 

Oklahoma State Fair: Oklahoma City 

In September, Oklahoma City celebrates its State Fair, one of the best events in the state. A million visitors take part in the activities. 

Watonga Cheese & Wine Festival: Watonga

Watonga Cheese Festival takes place for two days in October. If you can’t resist wine and cheese, you should be there. In between the wine and the cheese, there will be plenty of arts and crafts.

International Festival – Lawton

Enjoy the music and foods from different cultures at the International Festival in Lawton at the end of September.

Tulsa Greek Festival 

If you love gyros and Greek pastries, and all things feta, you’ll love the Greek Festival in Tulsa- during the last week in September. Immerse yourself in Greek music and dancing. 

Top Things to do in Oklahoma

Talimena Scenic Byway

The Talimena Scenic Byway via/Arkansas State Highway 88 is an incredible experience that takes the driver from Mena 54 miles through the Ouachita National Forest through the Queen Wilhelmina   State Park. All of nature’s palettes are alive here. The drive is spectacular, and the destination is even better – the Rock House in Talihina. Look for the Rock House off a small dirt road by Blackjack Ridge Drive and enjoy the best steak of your life.

Surprisingly, the U.S. is the only country with a centralized weather bureau operating 24 hours a day each day of the year.

Landlocked Oklahoma may not seem the place for romantic river cruises, but it is by the rivers that you’ll partake in the most incredible sunsets.  Join the River Cruise and Dueling Piano Bar out of Oklahoma City. Listen to your favorite songs while you sip a drink and just enjoy the company of your beloved. The fun doesn’t have to end when you get back to dry land.

Weather in Oklahoma

The weather in Oklahoma beats the national average. There is less snow and less rain and more pleasant, sunny days. A mere six inches of snow per winter makes for a mild season. It averages around 40 inches of rain each year.

July is the hottest month, with the temperature in the mid-90s. The humidity can become high and uncomfortable during that time. January, Oklahoma’s coldest month, dips to the mid-20s. Neither season is extreme when compared to other states. As in most states, the shoulder months of May and September is the most delightful times to visit.
