Looking for the best over-water bungalows in Mexico? We’ve got the breakdown of where to go! Staying at a beachfront resort is amazing anytime, but essential on your honeymoon. What could be better than enjoying your honeymoon in a bungalow over the water? Enjoy your private paradise with amazing views, and the water only steps away.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba

At the Banyan Tree Mayakoba, they’ve taken overwater bungalows to a whole new level. These are literally two-level rooms just waiting for you to enjoy! Located in the Riviera Maya and near Playa del Carmen, this resort is easily accessed from the Cancun airport. The resort is away from the hustle and bustle of the Cancun area and provides a slower change of pace with plenty of privacy for its guests.

The overwater villas have a totally unique architecture that you’ll appreciate. Natural wood slats make up the roof, with the sun peeking in at the ends for a totally open-air experience on the second story. Neither end is enclosed leaving your view unobstructed. Designed by famous architect, Sordo Madaleno, the architecture reminds you of your little cabin without the grass hut-type roof you typically associate with overwater bungalows. But the eco-friendly design is high-end and luxurious.

This two-story villa is also unique because it’s two stories! The top level includes sunbeds and pillows, hanging rope chairs that are attached to the ceiling, and best of all, your own private heated infinity plunge pool. The first level includes a king-size bed and a luxury bathroom. The villa also includes the use of two bicycles you can use to explore the resort or surrounding area.

You should know that these overwater bungalows are not located on the ocean side, but over on the lagoon side, still steps away from the ocean.

This resort is rated a AAA Five Diamond resort for excellence in amenities and service. The resort boasts nine restaurants and bars including Cello, La Copa Raw Bar, The Burguer Shop, Haab, Oriente, Reflections Pool Bar, Saffron, Sands Beach Club, and The Tomahawk. Indulge in a sunset or sunrise cruise (or watch them come and go from your balcony) or enjoy a meal in the jungle prepared Mayan style with local ingredients. When you’ve had enough of adventure and are ready to relax, head over to the spa where you can indulge in a facial, couples massage, steam, or body wrap.

Enjoy a relaxing honeymoon at the newest overwater bungalows in Mexico.

FAQ

Are all overwater bungalow resorts in Mexico the same?

No. Keep in mind that all four properties on our list include overwater bungalows, but there is a big difference between a three-star resort and a five diamond resort. Decide what type of honeymoon you are truly looking for. Do you want to spend your time relaxing in the jungle or at the beach? Do you want an all-inclusive resort? Is a private infinity pool a deal-breaker? Do you need free wifi? Or wifi period? Once you answer these questions, you’ll know which option is best for you.

Do any of the resorts include a private infinity pool?

Yes! If you are looking for your very own pool AND an overwater bungalow you can have both at the Rosewood Mayakoba and Banyan Tree Mayakoba resorts. Both of these luxurious properties include private plunge pools and luxury overwater bungalows.

How do all-inclusive resorts work?

All-inclusive resorts with overwater rooms work just the same as any other resort. When you book your vacation, the price includes your meals while you are staying at the resort. Typically this is every meal in a restaurant, including beachside outlets. Most include drinks including water, soda, beer, and wine. Every hotel or hotel chain is different so if this is especially important to you, make sure you check the fine print at the resort you are considering.

None of these resorts are in Cancun. Will there still be plenty to do?

Absolutely! There is so much to do at all of these locations. While each resort may have different specific activities that are included, there is a lot to do that is water-related. After all, that’s why you want an overwater bungalow right? Swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, boat rentals, and fishing are all water-related activities. With shopping, spa, and touring the general area you’ll have plenty to do on your honeymoon.
