Mercer Museum in Doylestown
This is certainly one of the most iconic museums in the world. Built as a six-story European castle, it exhibits items of everyday use during 18th century America. There are cobbler’s tools, tanning tools, hammers – more than 40,000 tools and other items are packed throughout the 55 rooms and even hanging from the ceiling. These items include a whaling boat, Conestoga wagon, and an old fire truck. Little is known about Mr. Mercer’s obsession with pre-industrial revolutionary artifacts.
Indian Echo Caverns
Located between Harrisburg and Hershey in Hummelstown, Indian Echo Caverns consists of stunning rock formations, stalagmites, and stalactites that have been a work-in-progress for millions of years. Water has been seeping through the ground and has created a six-foot pool of clear water. The rooms are fairly large and tall; the tallest is almost 50 feet high.
The design is constantly changing, but it’s a slow process. It can take 100 years for a slight shift to become noticeable.
Guided tours are approximately 45 minutes long. The temperature within the caverns is a consistent 52 degrees throughout the year, so dress accordingly.
