After months of planning your dream honeymoon, the last thing you want to worry about is your safety. Nothing can spoil an entire honeymoon like a stolen cell phone or someone getting hurt. With these 15 safest honeymoon destinations, the only things you’ll have to worry about are which romantic restaurants to choose and what time you need to leave for your couple’s massage.

Safety Tips When Honeymooning

No matter how safe a destination is statistically, there is always a slight chance of running into petty crime. Using a small amount of caution by following these safety tips can ensure you have an incident-free honeymoon.

Take a Trusted Guide

While exploring solo with your new spouse may seem more intimate, it also comes with the risk of accidentally ending up in an area or situation that isn’t ideal. Taking a trusted guide can keep you from running into problems. Plus, the guide will have more local knowledge, often sharing many interesting facts and information about the area’s history that you would never have learned venturing out on your own. You can ask your rental home host or hotel concierge services to recommend or arrange for a guide.

Don’t Walk Around Large Cities Alone at Night

Even though you aren’t technically alone on your honeymoon, it is better to head out in a larger group than as a pair at night. No matter how safe, big cities will always have some petty crime. Walking in a group is generally safer because everyone can look out for each other. Plus, criminals will be more intimidated than they would be by a couple or a solo person.

Book a Gated Rental Home or Resort

Gated residences are much more common in other parts of the world as compared to the U.S. If you book a gated residence or resort, it will prevent random people from being able to wander into where you’re staying. Fewer strangers hanging around mean fewer chances of theft or other crimes.

Don’t be Flashy

If you are walking in a crowd, keep expensive belongings hidden – that includes your smartphone, especially in higher-risk areas. Thieves will target those who look like they have something worthwhile to steal. If you’re walking around with a big camera and a Rolex on your wrist, you’re more likely to get taken advantage of than someone who has everything concealed.

Keep Your Belongings Close

Pickpocketing is the most common crime you will come across while traveling. Therefore, you should place your money and valuables in a more secure location. Keep your wallet and phone in a zippered front pocket or a crossbody bag, and be sure to put a luggage lock on your bag zippers.

Safest Honeymoon Destinations

1. Bali, Indonesia

Bali is one of the safest islands you can visit in Indonesia, complete with private gated residences and small village vibes. Serious crime is rare and you can look forward to an adventurous honeymoon enjoyed among lush, exotic scenery in Bali. Spend time doing everything from soaking up the sun on beautiful beaches and visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary to walking the Tegallalang Rice Terrace. That said, hold possessions tight when walking alongside roadways as drivers on scooters whizzing by can easily grab loose bags. Also, keep a close watch for credit card scams by checking your statements online frequently during your visit. It’s a good idea to bring a backup form of payment just in case.

2. Bora Bora

Safest Honeymoon Destinations

Bora Bora is known for its overwater bungalows and unique volcanic landscape but not for its crime. It has one of the lowest crime rates in the world and it’s even safe at night. The locals are very kind and respectful of others, including visitors. The only thing to worry about is petty crime like pickpocketing, so keep your items close. Although, if I was honeymooning in a beach bungalow in Bora Bora, I’m not sure I would want to leave my room anyway.

3. Amalfi Coast, Italy

The crime rate in the Amalfi Coast towns is almost zero, making it one of the safest places to visit in Italy. This is partly due to the coastal towns being so small and there is only one road in or out. That also makes it a super intimate honeymoon destination. Enjoy the epic drive along the Amalfi Coast Road to visit up to 13 coastal towns built on the cliffsides, or spend your time on beaches tucked into small coves. That said, while crime is practically unheard of, you’ll want to be extra cautious when driving narrow, winding roads. Landslides can occur, but generally only in the rainy winter season.

4. Fiji

Fiji is a Pacific island approximately 2,900 miles east of Australia, about a four-hour flight via the most direct route. Its remote location makes it a romance seeker’s and an ocean explorer’s dream, renowned for outstanding snorkeling and scuba diving among abundant marine life. Fiji is statistically safer than the U.S. as a whole but it is possible to fall victim to some petty theft or ATM skimming schemes. By taking the usual basic precautions, you’re unlikely to encounter any problems.

5. Maui, Hawaii

Maui is considered one of the most romantic islands in Hawaii, making it perfect for honeymooners looking for something not too far from home. You’ll get all the island vibes and the safe, secure feel of being in a U.S. state. Just like you would on the mainland, avoid leaving any valuables in your rental vehicle when out and about.

There is a wide range of activities that can be enjoyed in Maui, from romantic dinner cruises and winter whale watching (the best in the Hawaiian islands) to swimming in pools beneath some 15 waterfalls along the Road to Hana.

6. Kauai, Hawaii

Known as the “Garden Isle,” Kauai is another Hawaiian island ideal for honeymooners with a small town, laid-back feel, and an abundance of outdoor adventures at your doorstep. It also has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, bringing the chance to marvel at magnificent scenery while relaxing on the beach sipping Mai Tais. Enjoy the warm, welcoming atmosphere with the local people of Kauai incredibly friendly while the crime rate is even lower than Maui’s. That said, you’ll want to heed the same advice, ensuring valuables are locked in the trunk of your rental car or left in your accommodation.

7. Hamilton Island, Australia

Australia is ranked even safer than the United States as one of the world’s safest countries to visit. Not only do you not have to worry about serious crime, but you can enjoy some of the most beautiful islands providing access to the Great Barrier Reef. It’s a dream honeymooner’s destination. Hamilton Island, the largest island in the stunning Whitsundays, doesn’t allow vehicles. Here you’re pretty much guaranteed a relaxed and unforgettable experience surrounded by luxury. Not only is the scenery jaw-dropping, but visitors can enjoy a huge range of activities, high-quality food and wine, and world-class accommodation.

8. New Zealand

The Global Peace Index (GPI) ranked New Zealand as the fourth safest country in the world in 2023. It’s one of the most breathtaking and diverse destinations too, with everything from wild coastlines with beaches where penguins waddle to glistening glaciers, soaring mountains, surreal turquoise lakes, and rushing waterfalls. If you’re looking for an adventure of a lifetime, head to the South Island. Queenstown is considered the world’s adventure capital and the birthplace of bungee jumping. Skydiving, jet boating, parasailing, luging, and rafting are just a few of the other possibilities.

9. Madeira Islands, Portugal

Safest Honeymoon Destinations

The subtropical Madeira Islands belong to Portugal, although they’re closer to the northwest coast of Africa in the middle of the Atlantic. There isn’t much crime on the islands to speak of. You could probably leave your bag on a beach alone for hours and it will still be there when you return. Of course, we don’t advise testing that out on purpose. It’s still a good idea to use common sense precautions.

If you love coastal views, look no further than this lush archipelago, which includes some of the tallest seacliffs in Europe. From the nearly 2,000-foot-high cliff skywalk with a suspended glass platform, you’ll get a dizzying view of the volcanic cliffs, the ocean, and the towns of Funchal and Camara De Lobos.

10. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is one of the most famous Greek islands and one of the world’s top spots for honeymooners and other romance-seeking couples. It also boasts a very low crime rate with even petty theft and pickpocketing rare. That means you can soak up the atmosphere and the spectacular views day or night without worry.

It’s still a good idea to be cautious with your wallet, purse, or backpack in congested areas with visitors arriving from across the globe and crowds often gathering to watch the world-renowned sunsets. But you can always marvel at the colorful sky from your hotel’s cliffside infinity pool or terrace while sipping island-grown wine.

11. Seychelles

The Seychelles offer the ultimate island paradise, made up of 115 islands that lie along the equator in the Indian Ocean, 800 nautical miles off the coast of East Africa. You’ve probably at least glimpsed it in photos. With such stunning beauty that includes odd-shaped boulders strewn across unspoiled beaches with brilliant turquoise water, its images often go viral. It also offers some unique wildlife watching, inhabited by giant tortoises and rare birds.

What you won’t see in the Seychelles is any violent crime. The crime that does occur is typically opportunistic types of theft such as bag snatching. Keep your belongings secure and avoid walking in isolated areas at night.

12. St. Barts

St. Barts, short for Saint Barthélemy, is the safest island in the Caribbean that you can visit. The only thing you might have to worry about is being bitten by bugs (bring mosquito repellant). It’s not only super safe but it’s one of the most lavish islands in the Caribbean, with numerous luxury resorts and famous visitors. St. Barts is somewhat difficult to get to, but it’s worth the effort with few crowds and postcard-perfect beaches your reward.

13. Iceland

Safest Honeymoon Destinations

According to the Global Peace Index, Iceland is the No. 1 safest country in the world. In fact, it’s been ranked as the most peaceful nation since the inception of the GPI in 2009. Iceland is so safe that you’ll even see people leaving their babies out on the street before heading inside to shop in a store. This is partially due to the high standards of living Icelanders enjoy and the large size of the country with a relatively small population of about 373,000. While you’re blissfully exploring the jaw-dropping landscapes, discover everything from hot springs and magnificent waterfalls to glaciers and black sand beaches.

14. Japan

Safest Honeymoon Destinations

Japan has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world. That’s on top of the country’s low rate of theft combined with an exceptionally low rate of other violent crimes. You are safer in Japan than you are in the United States and the number of recorded crimes has decreased even more dramatically to historically low levels in recent years. Japan manages to rank very high for safety, peace, and quality of life despite being 12 times more densely populated than the U.S.

Plus, you’ll enjoy a wide range of attractions in the cities and throughout the rural countryside, including a strong dose of a cultural experience. Enjoy everything from visiting brightly colored temples and lively markets to soaking in hot springs among breathtaking scenery with clothing optional.

15. Switzerland

Switzerland is the perfect safe honeymoon destination for mountain lovers. This country with its dramatic alpine scenery that includes enchanting castles and soaring snow-capped peaks that reflect in surreal turquoise lakes below is likely to make you feel as if you’re living in a fairytale.
