Wyoming is in the western part of the U.S. It is one of the largest states and, with only around half a million residents, the least populous one. Wyoming has far more wildlife than people. Many of these people live in Cheyenne, the state’s capital.

Although Wyoming is still very much a wilderness state, it has embraced many crucial firsts. It was the first state to permit women to vote and the first state to have a woman governor. 

The wild terrain of Wyoming includes several national parks, such as the incomparable Yellowstone Park, which is the country’s first national park. Its primary attraction is the world-famous geyser, Old Faithful. This geyser can be counted on to erupt every half hour or so and keep its audience mesmerized.

Yellowstone was meant to be hiked. There is lots of wildlife to amaze you, such as the bisons at Hayden Valley. Mornings and early evenings are the best times to spot them. Lamar Valley as the northeast part of Yellowstone National Park near Mammoth Hot Springs has so much roaming wildlife, it is frequently referred to as “America’s Serengeti.” To see as many wild creatures as possible, a tour is highly recommended. There are full-day and sunrise tours.  The longer, full-day tour includes actual hiking in search of wildlife. Relax – the guides carry bear spray.

Wyoming’s ecosystem (the one responsible for the geysers in Yellowstone) provides some remarkable hot springs. These are the perfect sites to relax and just admire each other and the surroundings. These heated springs are a destination lure, especially when the weather gets chilly. Thermopolis in Hot Springs State Park has clothing-optional tubing. The Granite Hot Springs in Jackson are accessed by a snowmobile ride, followed by a jump into the welcoming heat. The system at Mammoth Hot Springs bursts out 500 gallons of hot water every minute – quite a site. And so worth it when you find the perfect lot temperature for you while it snows all around you.

Wyoming’s capital, Cheyenne, has an assortment of romantic things to do. Dillinger’s Bar has great drinks, music, and comedy nights. The Outlaw Saloon has pool tables and slots to keep you busy. If you prefer, dance to old-fashioned country music at the Bunkhouse Bar and Grill.

When in northern Wyoming, be sure to visit Sheridan. It’s a college town with several museums, such as the Brinton Museum and the Whitney Center for the Arts. The Brinton Museum specializes in early American and Native American art; the Flemish Revival building itself is a work of art.

For some excellent libation in Sheridan, visit the Mint Bar. At over 100 years old, this is where real cowboys get together for a cold one. Listen to old-timers tell tales of people riding their horses into the bar. The old cowboy days are still alive in Wyoming.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Annual Casper Balloon Roundup in Casper is a weeklong celebration in July for balloonists from all over the U.S. Beginning at 6:00 a.m., massive numbers of balloons are launched into the sky. One of the best views of the balloons is up Casper Mountain. Downtown Caster will fill with live music and plenty of food throughout the day. 

Green River Rendezvous

The Green River Rendezvous is an annual festival in Pinedale and takes place in mid-July.  It re-creates the mountain men and Indians of the Upper Green River Valley and their fur trade of the 1880s. This is where rugged individuals such as Kit Carson became legends. The rendezvous was an important event to the trappers who spent each winter hunting for furs, then met and celebrated together every summer “on the Green.”

Old West Days

For 40 years during the end of May, Jackson Hole has celebrated the Old West Days which embraces the western history and culture of Jackson Hole. There will be music, arts and crafts, rodeos, and food.

Wyoming Brewers Festival

For almost 25 years, the Wyoming Brewers Festival has featured more than 100 beers from the Rocky Mountains in a two-day fest in mid-June. Beer, food, and music all happen at the Depot Plaza in Cheyenne.

Plains Indian Museum Powwow

This Powwow in mid-June takes place for two days in the town of Cody. Several tribes celebrate their heritage through various dancing and competitions. There will be Indian jewelry, clothes, pottery, sculptures for decorating your new home. Vendors will be selling food and drinks.

Gold Rush Days

The Old West comes alive in mid-July in South Pass City. Relive the frontier days and pan for gold, see gold mining demonstrations, enjoy saloon music (not the saloon girls), and see reenactments of scenes from a Pony Express stop. There will be food, followed by fireworks.

Top Things to do in Wisconsin

Teton National Park

You’ll find the aforementioned Jackson Hole and Jenny Lake in Teton National Park. But there is a lot more to see and do. There are hiking destinations with waterfalls and the incredible Grand Teton. The Snake River snakes through the park and is a haven for rafters and kayakers. Menor’s Ferry takes visitors back in time to the old West, to a general store and original cabin with period furnishings. The Ferry was once the only way across the Snake River. The early twentieth-century log chapel was used as the church in the television series, The Waltons, and is still a place of worship today.

Grand Prismatic Spring

Yellowstone is filled with hot springs, but the Grand Prismatic Spring stands out. It is the US’s largest hot spring with permanent vibrant colors. The water that is spewed, all 560 gallons every minute, is hot enough to be sterile; it’s that incredible heat that produces the rings of colors. There is a hiking trail that allows a stunning view of the Grand Prismatic Spring.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

There are many reasons to visit Jackson Hole. Its summer rodeo is high on that list. Experience the cowboy life while viewing some serious bull riding, calf roping, and bronc riding. 

Jackson Elk Refuge

The National Elk Refuge within the Grand Tetons takes you on your own western adventure. During the winter, take a horse-drawn carriage tour through the refuge. Watch thousands of these fascinating animals and learn more about them. You will probably also encounter roaming wolves. The carriage ride will take you through some of Wyoming’s most breathtaking mountain scenery.

National Wildlife Art Museum

The National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson Hole has 5,000 different works of art created by artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, John James Audubon, and Andy Warhol. 

Best of all, the museum’s restaurant, Palate, overlooks the Elk Refuge. Great food with an unparalleled view. Each Thursday, Palate offers wine tasting with music. It will be difficult to choose between the art within the museum and the art outside created by nature.

Visit Cody

It is worth visiting Cody, Wyoming, just to see the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. This is a huge complex re-creating the Wild West of our ancestors.  There is a firearm building, a Western arts building, a Native American building, and specifically a museum dedicated to Buffalo Bill.

There are nightly rodeos held in Cody from June through the end of August. These are the only nightly rodeos in the U.S. Serious hikers should take advantage of the trails in the Shoshone National Forest. While in Cody, enjoy one of the tastiest steaks in the West and a romantic evening at the Cassie’s Supper Club and Dance Hall.

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort has consistently been called one of the best ski resorts in Wyoming and the U.S. The annual snowfall here is 450 inches, so good powder is usually guaranteed. While it is popular with both experienced and beginning skiers, the resort is best known for its challenging 4,139 drop. This is a skier’s nirvana in the winter. In the summer, the resort turns into a hiking paradise. 

Weather in Wisconsin

The weather in Wyoming is greatly determined by its elevation that can reach up to 13,785 feet. These elevated mountains cause a great deal of the Pacific air to rise and cause a lot of precipitation, especially in the western zone. The east remains semi-dry.

The mountains accumulate plenty of snow, which in turn melts and feeds the streams and lake, resulting in the beautiful terrain that in Wyoming.

The mountains also keep the temperature down. Even the hottest day rarely reaches 100 degrees. Some high mountain regions reach a maximum of 70 degrees during the summer. The nights can get chilly, even in the summertime, going down into the 50s. Humidity in the summer is rare and low.

The winters are unsurprisingly cold and drop to 10 degrees or even lower. Wyoming has seen minus 66 degrees. The city of Cody, at a level of 5,000 feet, can get a January temperature of 11 degrees. Winters last for a long time in Wyoming, cutting short spring and fall seasons. Moderate snowfall can occur between November and May, with a single episode bringing up to 15 inches of the white stuff.
